Ajuga
Bugleweed
Ajuga is a genus in the mint family that includes approximately 40 species. Many of the species are rhizomatous perennials. Ajugas are used in the landscape extensively as ground covers. In general Ajuga prefers well drained sandy soils. However, they will tolerate clay soils if well drained. Grow Ajuga in shady areas but sun can be tolerated in northern areas if adequate moisture is provides. In southern areas mourning sun will be suitable for most varieties.
This popular ground cover grows from zone 3 to 9. Plants grow rapidly and tolerate a wide range in soil pH (4-6.5). In well drained soils, generally there are no serious problems. However, particularly in the south, plants should be divided when crowding occurs to avoid problems.
Be particularly attentive at planting not to cover the crown. Space individual plants 12 – 15 inches apart.
Old flower spikes should be mowed or removed by trimming. Other wise this is a relatively maintenance free plant.
